How it Happened

KnoticUS can trace its lineage back to the summer of 1990, when one man named Bart joined the US Navy and developed a fascination with "Nautical Fancywork."  What is "Nautical Fancywork" you ask?  It is a decorative art form made entirely of rope, cord, canvas, string, and so forth.  Fancywork originated with old sailors on wooden sailing ships and the art still exists today.  The only problem is....it has to done by hand.

Over the next few years, Bart honed his skills and learned from every expert he could find.  Within several years, Bart too, became an expert.  He was overwhelmed with requests for his various designs.  Dog leashes, knife sheaves, Bos'n Lanyards, I.D. holders, key holders, stopwatch holders....the list is endless.

Every spare minute of Bart's life was consumed with tying knots....and consuming a lot of bandaids.  He would sit in the recliner for two days just to make one product.  The cat would roll around in the hundreds of feet of cord that was stretched across his living room.  His wife would get upset because he wouldn't take her out to dinner or to see a movie.  Bart soon began to think, "...it would be really nice if I had a machine that could tie this stuff for me." And so, the seed was planted, the seed that would become...KnoticUS.

Bart spent the following years developing different designs, building them and testing them until he finally got it right.  He then spent the next several years procuring funding, refining the design, prototyping, debugging and new product development.  Bart called his machine the "Quarterdeck" and it is the very first knot-tying machine of its kind in the world.  Some have referred to the Quarterdeck as being equivalent to the cotton-gin for its ability to mass-produce products that could only be made by-hand.

Bart formally incorporated in 2005 in Honolulu, Hawaii...a full ten years after his light bulb first came-on.  He moved to Virginia in 2007 and consolidated his entire operation in Gloucester County.  In the summer of 2008, Bart converted from a Hawaii entity to a Virginia Corporation.  He did a complete overhaul to the company and is now doing business as KnoticUS.

KnoticUS officially launched into production in the spring of 2009 with our new name, new look, new theme, new website and more product designs.  We are not focusing on one particular market, but rather, going after every one possible.  We have become untied and the customers love our products!  The cord is spinning at KnoticUS and we are KNOT stopping!!!

What began as one mans fascination with decorative knots has turned into an American based industry with first-of-a-kind technology, mass producing high quality products for a range of applications.  And just imagine....all of this is possible without any more blisters!
